After sending this post I read the URL and I was not able to do a "no
switchport". I was running 12.2.15T7. I upgrade to 12.3.4T and sure
enough it works!
C3745(config)#inter fa 2/3
C3745(config-if)#no switchport
C3745(config-if)#ip address 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
