PPP or HDLC

what should we place for encap on serial ... ppp or hdlc if we are told to do
any...

my observation is :
-ppp will convert make the route also comes in /32 mask.
-on the interface when i do :
                no encap
                encap ppp
                clockrate 64000
                ip add x.x.x.x x x.x.x.x
on the onther end it is also configured but when i do sh interface s0 it give
me "OPEN CDP"
Then i do again on interface
                no encap
                encap ppp
now it says "OPEN CDP , IPCP"

so i now on my practice gives the encap in the end after giving ip add.
