So a better way to do that is first shutdown the interface, then change the
configuration completely (any network protocols completely configured) and
then no shut. That way you can be sure your PPP NCP are going to be
negotiated and will be available and open.

But about HDLC, does it negotiate the network protocols runnign over it or
just uses a type_field like ethernet does?

By the way, if you are not requested to change anything, I think is better
to use the propietary protocols configured by default.

TIA

Don't forget you can stop the /32 from appearing on your router using the
interface command 'no peer neighbor-route' on the ppp interface.

You will still have the /30 or whatever network route on the interface.
This can be especially important on a NAS where you don't want 200 or more
routes appearing and dissapearing as users dial in and log out :-)

The CDP Open simply means you have the Cisco Discovery Protocol enabled on
that interface.

The IPCP stands for IP Configuration Protocol and its part of the PPP
Negotiation phase. This is the phase of negotiation that checks for
loops, compression, address negotiation, authentication if required etc etc

Once the ip address is entered it knows it has to do IPCP.
