AppleTalk on FastEthernet interface

I connected two routers (R1 & R2) using a crossed-over cable attached to
FastEther port. Then I configured IP on both sides of the routers and both
interfaces were up/up. When I configured AppleTalk on both interfaces
with EIGRP routing protocol, the interface on one of the routers (R2)
changed its state to up/down after few seconds while the interface on the
other router (R1) remained in up/up state. Also IP connectivity between
R1 and R2 over the FastEther link is lost.

Both routers are identical (7000). Both interfaces are configured
identically (except, ofcourse, for the IP address). On R2 I have configured
AppleTalk on another FastEther interface, which is connected to a
Catalyst switch, and it is working properly. On R1 I have configured
AppleTalk on an ATM subinterface, and it is working properly.

I have tried shut/no shut and also reloaded router R2. But the interface
is still in up/down state, after a brief up/up state while AppleTalk is
initializing.

Has any one encountered a similar problem? Is this a bug or a
misconfiguration? I have included the interface configurations for both
routers:

R1
====
interface FastEthernet0/1
 ip address 192.168.25.1 255.255.255.0
 appletalk cable-range 551-600 581.33
 appletalk zone sis
 appletalk protocol eigrp
 no appletalk protocol rtmp

R2
===
interface FastEthernet0/1
 ip address 192.168.25.2 255.255.255.0
 appletalk cable-range 551-600 572.48
 appletalk zone sis
 appletalk protocol eigrp
 no appletalk protocol rtmp
