SSM with Data-MDT will give you optimal unidirectional traffic flow and would still use an mGRE tunnel but design wise it's optimal unlike the Default-MDT which depicts a LAN flooding behaviour

Other then that take a look into Next-Gen MVPN where you can tunnel mcast through MPLS, you'll have to see what your multi vendor environment support and looking at Cisco live video there are many options to play with, you need to check what code supports what feature though
