virtual link authentication

Please someone clear my head on this one....

OK, so I've always considered a virtual-link to be part of the the backbone
area. But now, I've seen some labs that appear to be contradicting each
other when it comes to authentication.

I understand that if a question states that Area 0 requires authentication,
a virtual-link would need to be authenticated. But what if the transit area
requires authentication and Area 0 doesn't? Would the virtual-link need to
be authenticated? My first though would be no since I consider a
virtual-link to actually be Area 0.....
