by 2 "strings" you mean 2 different community strings?

the community strings are going to be for the router you are polling, and
you can have multiple strings for RW, RO snmpv1 and 2c, and then you have
even more possibilities when you move to snmpv3, with users/groups/views...

and the router will send traps with each link, link1(11mb) and link2(2mb),
uniquely identified by the interface ID and that is how you can
log/save/sort/report on which one is up or down...

unless i am missing your point?
