I agree, I usually do start off with pre-pending of the AS path. However, some unammed providers will set a local pref of 90 to their peering routes and jack up their customer advertised routes (still want that nth billing). Most of those providers have a publicized communities they will accept that will do the trick though. For example, 701:80 will set the local pref of your advertised routes to Verizon.
