What you really need is motivation, the one which helps you through the
failures to pass cause you won't likely pass on your first run. This
motivation really leads you towards success, you understand WHY you need
it, then it is just a matter of time to get it.
One Himalayan mountain guide (may he rest in peace) once said,
commenting on clients weakness while trying to attempt mount Everest:
"It is not altitude, it is your attitude".
This is really a psychological thing more than technological, otherwise
hundreds of thousands would have passed by now. The lab and the preps
are quite a bit outside the normal pattern of people's life. It is hard
to push yourself in that area, but once you have a good reason for that,
you are unbeatable.
Not just work hard and you will pass, work hard and know why, and you
will pass.

I have an impression that unless you are a trainer with 10+ years experience of teaching CCIE your chances are very slim. It looks like less then 1% are passing. I consider myself a smart guy but was never in the first 1% in school either.
