Usually when you have problems with spanning-tree is a poor implementation
at the edge.
Two things that I have done in the past that solved this at different
companies.
1. Make a rule that no hubs on the network. We had auto scripts login to
devices and shutdown ports if users attempted to plug in a hub. They had to
call the help desk to get their port turned back on.
2. If you do allow hubs turn on bpduguard and turn off portfast for all
ports connected to the hubs.
You could even write expect scripts or use rancid to write the scripts to
look for more than one mac on a port to turn of portfast.
Taking the above steps solved the majority of spanning-tree problems in the
organizations I worked in. I know it is just the basics but it is not
usually the network infrastructure that has spanning-tree issues. It is the
user introduced problems in my experience.

Subject: Re: Spanning-tree Alternatives
If your having problems in your layer 2 network your probably not using
spanning tree effectively. Your options are to either ensure that you
don't have any alternate paths In your network. Or ensure you have spanning
tree on.
