I know a number of folks who are former-certified. In many cases, they
just have moved into roles that no longer require that technical
knowledge (typically management). So, while they were doing
design/turning wrenches a decade ago when they got the CCIE, it's no
longer their focus, even though they are still in the field.

Of course, I'm sure there are others who change career fields altogether
and decide to herd sheep or something.

Good point Anthony and very wisely said.

I'm engaged in a dialogue about this and maybe it will make it to the
public soon wnough.

I think we have a few examples of this kind of thing from at least a few
former CCIE's.
