My personal hope is that if Cisco wants to certify people as experts
in high-end platforms, they do it as some type of specialization.
Every now and then I'm fortunate enough to work in an all-Cisco shop,
but that's increasingly rare. What I love about the CCIE cert is that
it's technology oriented vs. product oriented and most people in the
industry (at least the technical ones) are aware of that. I'm working
with a new client right now where the main internal network architect
is a former SE from a major Cisco competitor. I don't think I appear
to him as Cisco-biased just because I hold the CCIE certification.
Were the focus of the cert to shift from OSPF, BGP, etc to 6509s and
Nexus platforms, I think people would legitimately be able to point at
a CCIE and say "you're only recommending that expensive Cisco platform
because it's what you're certified in." That would be a bad day for
the program indeed...
