While it could be any value, my best guess would be that back then we
were just starting to get into things and had mostly 16-bit processors
and it became an "ease of programming" at the machine code/assembler level.

Even back then, the assumption was we'd move to a 32-bit processor and
eventually to a 64-bit one. So while they could come up with an address
of semi-infinite length, they probably looked at the machine types and
processing capability of the time and worked within semi-efficient scopes.

Just my two cents. (That was even before my time) ;)
