It's legacy.

When you type a command - it is committed.

You have two commands that rock:

sh config - and save it out to text. - The commands that are manually
entered and non-default.

sh config all - all the commands - both default and the ones manually
entered. Careful if you are a tree-hugger...

4006-1> (enable) sh boot
BOOT variable = bootflash:cat4000-k8.8-4-7-GLX.bin,1;
CONFIG_FILE variable = bootflash:switch.cfg
Configuration register is 0x2102
ignore-config: disabled
auto-config: non-recurring
console baud: 9600
boot: image specified by the boot system commands

4006-1> (enable) copy bootflash:switch.cfg tftp
File bootflash:switch.cfg does not exist
Failed to copy from bootflash:switch.cfg to tftp

-4006-1> (enable) sh file switch.cfg
error = -9
File bootflash:switch.cfg can not be opened (file not found)
-4006-1> (enable) sh file bootflash:switch.cfg
error = -9
File bootflash:switch.cfg can not be opened (file not found)
-4006-1> (enable)

Nice try.

See you can't read the file because it is in use and running as I recall and
as you can see above - it just won't let you.

It's not the typical IOS... Still CatOS.

Hope this helps - But I think you already tried what I just displayed.
