RE: GSS - Why Need

Well, the answer is really rather simple. How do your users access the
sites? Is it a public web site, or otherwise accessible over the
Internet? If so, they are most likely using a DNS name to get to the
site, like www.google.com. If a site goes down, how do they know, and
how do they get to the alternate site? GSS basically acts as a DNS
server for specific domain names. So, you would delegate a specific
address, such as www.service.com, to the GSS via normal DNS NS entries.
Then, the GSS would answer queries with a very low TTL, like 5 seconds,
with stickiness. It would also poll each site for reachability, and
possibly load. It could then direct users to one of the sites based
upon that information.

If it is not a public Internet accessible site, then it could also be
used for "normal" DR solutions. It would act in much the same manner,
but instead of answering DNS queries for public DNS names it would
answer queries for internal, private, DNS domain names.

You would place a GSS at each remote site, and you would set NS entries
for both GSS servers. So, if one site were completely down, including
the GSS at that site, the other GSS would answer the query, and
obviously direct users to the site where it was located which would
still be up...

Subject: GSS - Why Need

Dear All,

I am designing a primary/DR sites setup, where we will have dedicated
servers for Web, DNS, DHCP services. My concern is high availability of
these services to Internet and remote users. If a service goes down on
one
site or full site goes down, service should be accessible through other
side. In this scanerio do i need GSS if yes then why and where i will
place
it.
I have gone through GSS datasheets but couldn't understand whether i
need
this box and what that couldn't work without it.

Regards
John
