With "no switchport", that would infer a router interface not a switchport.
That feature is not supported on the HWIC.
And FYI, those old 6500 days aren't gone.

I guess all I am saying is configure the port as a layer2 port and
configure the layer3 interface.
Just the same way as the old hybrid 6500 days.
