I've seen the same problem while working on my preparation. The
switch also (usually) logs an error when bringing the interface up.
Anyway, the best way I could find to deal with the problem was to
reset the switch interface a couple of times (shut/no shut). As soon as
the error message stopped showing up, the ping would generally work.
Never took more than two or three tries :)
Yes, I know this doesn't solve the underlying problem, but... it
worked for me :)
