I agree... Valium *can* make you groggy in the morning, if your not used to it., but you just need to take it real early the night before..
any type of sedative should be good, but one that helps with nervousness *should* work better, E.G. Valium or ativan, etc...I'm sure ambien is good too... but it's not for nervousness...remember, if you cant sleep, you might not "think" your nervous, but you probably are..once your mind is at ease, you'll should be able to get to sleep, especially if you havent been sleeping lately..
take it around 5pm the night before the lab, and each night from now until the lab if you can (I'd call your doc right now or head to an urgent care to make sure you sleep every night until the lab)...nothing wrong with doing that...the lab will hopefully only come around once, or a few times in your life...you need to be rested for that.....eat a big dinner early the day of the lab, so you can try and get to sleep real early, and order room service to eat a big breakfast the morning of the lab before heading out..
make sure you drink a bunch of coffee in the morning, but I wouldnt worry too much about being groggy the day of the lab...trust me, your adrenalin will win over any *morning-after* grogginess from a sedative you took 14 hours before...
Remember, sleep deprivation is used as a torture mechanism for POWs...nothing to mess around with...without sleep, you'll NEVER pass the lab...
Melotonin is "hit and miss"...I took it once and was up ALL NIGHT..No kidding... all night...some people swear by it..
There's a reason they give you a shot of valium before going into surgery...it works for pretty much anyone!! :-)
good luck..
