MGCP IOS GW & vg224s registration on ccm 4.2.x

Hi GS,

Can some one explain me on how changing "the domain name & name servers " on
IOS MGCP gateway will impact 1) the existing registration of gw with CCM and
2) status of current calls on the wire ?

The reason , why I am asking this Q is that , I am in a situation now where
I need to modify the configured DNS domain name + name servers ( NOT
Hostnames though) on 10 of my mgcp gateways. Since whenever we configure
MGCP gateways on CCM , she require us to supply the DOMAIN name & Host name
of the gateway ( as oppose to IP address on H323 gateway configuration) , I
am suspecting that , I may have to face some "Downtime". Because in this
situation , I need to make changes at BOTH the ends , i.e on both gateway as
well as on backend CCM and that will force the previous registration to
break & then new registration will takes place.

So that process may give me 1 or 2 mins of hit/downtime.

Is the above thinking valid ?

Is there any way , I can avoid downtime while I make these changes ?

My limited understanding is that , the configured Domain name on CCM for
MGCP gateways is only for initial registration for q931 MGCP Backhaul ONLY
and she is has NOTHING to do with call processing from end IP handset nodes
? In other words , for both On-Net & Off-net calls to happen , these Domain
name & Name servers configs are required at all ?

Finally , I do have few VG224s that are added as MGCP ( I should have added
them as Skiny in the 1st place , any way ...) gateways as well. And as you
may aware , you can add VG224s as just with just Host Names ( i.e no DNS
name prefix is necessary on CCM). And on IOS Vg224s , I have not configured
any domain names & name servers. That said , as long as I am not changing
the VG224's Hostnames , the above required domain name & name server changes
on IOS gateways will in NO way disrupt services on faxing side of the things
on Vg224s , right ??

Your feedback is much appreciated.

Cheers

tony
