On that note...

I had a funny idea lately, since I was feeling a
little light on the CatOS side of things versus the
IOS side of things and this was using my little fleet
of Cisco 5505's with RSM and/or 4506's with WS-X4232's
to work out the labs.

Now you might wonder why? Well the CatOS is still
alive on so many networks and guess what... I have to
work on so many of those networks with the CatOS, so
why not feel like I own every command.

I'm taking the same concept to other vendor's switches
as well and I just finished buying my third old
Cabletron to do something similar with the Cabletron
(Enterasys).

As you can imagine, I get called to work on networks
with Foundry, Nortel, 3Com, and even Extreme, and
while I can usually figure it out, it would be helpful
to be more "masterful" with other switching platforms
as well.

I might also add that while interviewing with Cisco
once upon a time, I got the feeling that being
knowledgeable (extremely) about the competition, that
one would have a special place as an SE or FE.

Remember Cisco likes taking over other vendor accounts
and strongholds.

While it is strictly better to have the latest and
greatest switches, most of the tasks in
Switching/Bridging have to do with the conceptual
understanding of the technology; so...

If it came down to buying 2 3560's versus buying 1
3560 and 2 3550's...

You got it... Buy the triangle.

And if you had to buy the triange with a 3550, 3560,
and a 4000/5000/5500 switch with L3 capability, then
you get an added bonus of now learning even more about
Switching and maybe even helped yourself get the next
job too.

Recall a lot of older CCIE's got certified on CatOS
and so they know it better and the newer CCIE's got
certfied on the IOS... knowing both adds an Ace to
your hand.

But... there will be those who say differently.

However, how many networks still have Cat6000/6500
with CatOS?

You got it. CatOS is a bit of a nice skill to have.

Arguably one can figure it out. But wouldn't you
rather be the expert? And they are dirt cheap.
