Nicky,
          If you are on a router that does not have multicasting enabled,
how do you expect the router to know where the source is? Please enable
multicast routing on the router and enable dense mode(in your case) on the
interfaces connecting to other multicast routers so that your router can be
a part of the source tree and knows where to direct your ping. You should
see a (S,G) entry in your mroute table for the source once you enable dense
mode on the router. You can also emulate a source using the command, "ip
igmp join-group x.x.x.x" command on one of the routers which would then be
considered directly connected to the source.
