Critical thinking and scientific method are not dependent on learning
how OSPF works. :-)
IMO, the real core components of scientific method are 1) testability,
2) repeatability, and 3) peer review. You need to be able to form
falsifiable hypotheses, test them under controllable, repeatable
conditions, and your methods need to be open to the scrutiny of other
people knowledgeable in the field. It just so happens that many aspects
of networking are subject to the scientific method.
Doctors learn (or attempt to learn...) these ideas in their field too,
as do mechanics, engineers, etc etc. Some disciplines, such as financial
trading and some aspects of police work (e.g., personal combat) are a
bit different, in that the amount of information available is
necessarily limited, and the time constraints are extreme. Decision
making under conditions of limited information is a whole sub-discipline
that borrows from, but is not the same as, scientific method.
Sorry for the off topic ramble, but this is an area of academic interest
for me...

Subject: value of the CCIE certification in other disciplines
I'm just finishing up a lab from IE WB VOL II, v4.1 and I can't help but
wonder.
Do you guys/gals see the problem solving value in getting the Cert, as
far
as general LIFE thinking skills development, logical conclusions drawn
under
stress, etc. This could apply even if you don't want to do Cisco.
For instance could you imagine a doctor, or even a police officer that
had
the step by step, discipline we build our lives around while we are
getting
the cert.
I'm thinking Cisco CCIE training should be an elective part of many
professions.
