You can't add an IP address directly onto the HWIC port. You'll need to
create a vlan on the router and assign an SVI to it with an IP address. Then
you add the HWIC port as an access port into the VLAN and you should be
rockin and rollin.

Subject: Confusion on HWIC-4ESW
Hi Group,
I am planning to add hwic-4esw to one of my routers. But I am not exactly
sure how this interface can configure for IP address. Cisco site indicates
it's a L2 switching ports. All I want is to increase my Ethernet ports on
1841 by one more (comes with two Fast ethernet ports). By using hwic-4esw
can it be configured with all 4 ports with 1 ip address (which gives me the
additional ip address I required) or can it be configured with ip address to
each port?.
Or any other module for 1841 to achieve this?.
Thanks
CP
