Alex,

When you mention secondary address, do you mean an additional ip
address in the same subnet as the physical interface as R1 and R2?

Extract from 12.4T HSRP notes:

You can see below that Cisco HSRP virtual ip address cannot use the
physical HSRP router ip address, hence VRRP is more approriate since
VRRP does not require an additional ip address for it's virtual ip.

R6(config-if)#standby ip 150.1.56.6
% address cannot equal interface IP address
R6(config-if)#
