First-hop redundancy protocols

Hello,

I have 2 questions relating to first-hop redundancy protocols.

1. Lets assume that you have 2 x routers - R1 and R2. These routers are
both connected to the same Ethernet LAN segment; devices on this network
should use R1 as the default gateway, and R2 should take over in the
event of failure, however hosts on the segment should only have 1
gateway configured. If there is nothing in the question to indicate
secondary addressing, is using VRRP the most appropriate solution?

2. IRDP: what platforms can support this protocol (Unix, Windows?)?
Would the following be a minimum configuration (assume, again, that R1
is preferred):

R1

interface ethernet0
  ip irdp
  ip irdp preference 200

R2

interface ethernet0
  ip irdp

Would I need anything else? I'd be interested in testing IRDP (I know,
it's a legacy protocol, but I'm a glutton for punishment).

Alex
