Not labbed but here it goes.
Cisco has a proprietary protocol called CGMP
This protocol prunes Multicast traffic on a CISCO switch.
The way it does this is by "talking" to the Cisco router about IGMP join
messages.
This way the Cisco switch builds a port-multicast stream database.
IGMP Snooping is the standards based version of the same function.
