Hello Everyone,
I am trying to understand how does traceroute work. Its one of those things that I have never bothered to look into deeply. Now I know that there are 2 different ways to traceroute. One using udp and the other using icmp. I have searched the archives and have read up on some good explanations. However I am trying to find out why we get multiple entries at each hop. I believe that this is due to the load balancing method that is being used but is there any way to determine what is the actual path that is being taken. I have included a sample I took from one of the route servers. On the 6th, 7th & 11th hops multiple ip's are being reported which indicates that there are multiple paths. this was taken from a cisco hence we are using UDP. can someone please assist in interpreting this result specifically for the 6th, 7th & 11th hop. Would traffic sent to this destination behave any differently assuming that we are doing the default per destination load balancing? I have also not!
iced that when using microsoft to do traceroutes it seems like it never reports any multiple paths. Can someone shed a little light on that as well. Thanks for your responses.
