It's backward compatible,

we run it with no problems, there are some devices
in our network that cant run RSTP.

I would recommend RSTP of course for faster
convergence. Its also cool if you want to migrate,
you can do a piece of your network at a time with no
ill effects.

Oh, RSTP converges almost instantly in our network..
