I've never tried mixing and matching, but you're correct.... It would seem
the best decision to do a like-to-like port type.

Very interesting. I would imagine that the redirector port has to
be the same port type as the monitor source since different port types use
different ASICs (e.g. If I'm asked to configure RSPAN on one of the GigE
ports, I better use the other GigE port as a redirector port.

For those of you that may be curious, the Fast Ethernet ports on the
switches use COIL ASICs (there's many generations). The Gigabit Ethernet
ports use PINNACLE ASICs (many generations as well).

No, the reflector port is a port near to the source of the RSPAN. The ASICs
will be commandeered in order to reduce the amount of processing done on the
originating switch. That port will be rendered useless to usability.

So it's just a port on the originating switch. It is NOT the source,
destination or a trunk port in between.

Scott

Am I correct in saying that the reflector-port is the
target/destination interface in which the sniffer/network monitoring device
is attached? I understand that this is occuring over a VLAN and the
destination can be multiple hops away, but it's unclear to me whether the
reflector-port is the final destination or the trunk uplink. I "believe"
it's the "final" destination, but I thought I would ask.

The Catalyst 2970, 3560, and 3750 switches do not require configuration of a
REFLECTOR port when configuring an RSPAN session.

Are you sure that's a 3550. I haven't seen one with a g1/0/10 interface.
Maybe a 3750 that doesn't require a reflector port?
