In a nutshell, you have to make your first attempt within 18 months of
passing the Written, your next attempt within 12 months of your first
attempt, and all attempts within 3 years of passing the Written or you have
to pass the Written again. See...clear as mud!

I know that you must at least attempt the CCIE lab within 18 months of the
written, but what are the restrictions if you should fail the first lab
attempt?
Not that I'm planning to fail but it does happen.
