Loopbacks and OSPF Area's in the lab

If in the lab you are asked to put loopbacks into OSPF, but not explicity told which areas can you use any area number of your choosing. For example on one router I may wish to add a loopback to area 0 (area 0 is not already on this router) in order to make subsequent tasks work.
Clarity on this would be useful, thanks
