We boot off sup-slot0: on a number of 6500s, however
we've run into numerous issues/bugs so I would
recommend booting from bootflash if possible. I'm not
aware of a way to view the files on slot0: from the
MSFC, I believe you have to do that from the sup.
One problem we've had that prevents us from booting
off bootflash in some cases is that the older MSFCs
with only 16MB flash don't have enough space to hold
the newer images as well as the boothelper image. In
those cases, we've been booting from sup-slot0.
So to answer the question from my experience, the
easiest and cleanest way to upgrade the IOS would be
your first option listed below- downloading the code
to bootflash and modifying the boot statements. You
can always load the current IOS version to sup-slot0:
and add a boot statement to use this as a backup if
the new image doesn't boot properly from bootflash.
