OSPF area range command

I'm sure that this has been discussed in the past sometime, but I cannot find a link to search the archives, and the Cisco documentaiton doesn't seem to make this clear either.

Waht I am wondering is if the area x range command needs to go on all the routers in the specified area, or only on the ABR. Cisco documentation seems to say that onyl on the ABR, but I have tried this, and it doesn't seem to do it. In the routing table outside this area, I see the summary route as I should, and all the more specific routes as well.

Please comment.
