I completely agree with you that in real world an access port should be
configured in access mode. However, in the lab, I think you can very sure
that every port that's connected is connected to either a router or the
other Cat. So, in this scenario, I think it's OK to leave port connected to
a router in it's default mode as long as you have proper connectivity.
