That's true. Dialer watch will only trigger a call when the watch route is
no longer in the route table. A ping won't trigger a call. If you want,
you can have both dialer watch and dialer group configured. That's fine.
If you do configure both features, you can trigger a call with a ping or if
the route table removes the watched route.
One other detail with dialer watch you should be aware of. Before dialer
watch will work properly, the watched route must be in the route table. If
dialer watch doesn't find the route in the route table when the router first
boots up ( because for example, the routing protocol hasn't yet converged),
dialer watch will never trigger a call. There's a command, however, that
makes dialer watch wait a bit before checking the route table after the
router boots up so you can aviod this problem. Offhand, I don't remember
the command, but check the command reference under isdn or dial
technologies. There's a chapter on Backup Methods and it goes over the
various options available.
And, if you can, you should probably practice this a bit because it can be a
bit confusing to figure out how these different features interact, and which
ip addresses to use in the dialer map commands.
One other thing I just thought of is this: When you specify the route to be
watched, it must exactly match the route as it is in the route table. This
means that the network must be exactly the same in both places or otherwise
dialer watch will never kick in. Remember a route can't be missing from the
route table if it was never there in the first place.
