Manu,

An original EMI switch and SMI switch upgraded to EMI software is
_functionally_ identical. The hardware, however, actually has a
register in the SMI switch so when you do a "show version" (if I
remember correctly), it will show the switch model type as SMI but will
still run EMI software without a problem.

Keep in mind the software upgrade is expensive (I'm assuming around
$1000 or so). Be careful with licensing issues because if the seller
with the upgraded software didn't license and pay for the upgrade, its
comparable to purchasing a new computer and not receiving the Windows XP
CD.

Subject: 3550 switch

  Hi,
I am a CCIE student.I want to buy a catalyst 3550 switch to prepare
for my lab exam.I have heard that we need to practice on 3550 EMI switch
.What
is the actual difference between EMI & SMI.When I contacted a cisco
seller ,he
told me about a Catalyst 3550-24port SMI loaded with EMI ios.The ios
loaded in
the switch is c3550-i5q3l2-mz.121-19.EA1c.bin .Will this will be useful
for me
and will this do the same effect as a EMI switch.
                     With
regards,
                                     MANU.
