To be more specific,
You have 18 month after passing CCIE written, within that time, if you take
CCIE lab and fail, your will have another one year to attempt CCIE lab.
But after 3 years, you have to retake the written again.

The way I understand it, the written exam expires after a max of 3 years. It
can expire sooner depending on whether or not you've attempted the lab, but
regardless of lab attempts if you haven't passed the lab within 3 years of
passing the written, you need to retake the written.
