I really don't think books or coupons for books are holding that many
candidates back. Most folks who really want the CCIE will buy what the
need, and those that couldn't be bothered with vendor certs will continue
to ignore it. This is just good marketing by the best marketer in the
business.
Its hard to buy foundry/juniper/extreme/netscreen(juniper) etc after you
spend 3 years and lots of money learning how to make cisco boxes
tick. Cisco knows this, that's why they force VARs to ram all their people
through their dense cert system. It creates powerful advocates who make
decisions based upon their comfort level, instead of pure box capabilities
(which are very rationale decisions in many cases imho).
