One motivation for Cisco to produce a non-Windows version of IP
telephony products is continued growth in the service provider
market, especially telcos that are starting to offer VoIP. I know of
several major carriers that automatically reject any critical
applications that run on Windows.

In this product space, things aren't always UNIX -- you'll find some
of them on real-time operating systems such as VXworks.
