I'm hearing from certain unmentionable sources
that there *is* a way to do this. ...like a
super secret how-to document floating around
out there. An unsupported method maybe?
I have done this successfully on a 6509 and yes,
it tested my patience.

No.
Sup 2+/3/4 on Catalyst 4xxx switches only run IOS.
It is not quite like with 6xxx switches, where there are options. There
was never an option to run CatOS on Sup 2+/3/4, only on Sup 1 and 2.
