say if you have more than one path to a given destination...
would filtering in using dis list in the way you describe prevent you from
having the entry appear in the RT period ?

Alec,

It has to do with OSPF operation. OSPF doesn't advertise routes, it
advertises link states. Every OSPF router in the same area is aware of all
of the networks in that area, so there is no way to filter outgoing updates
with the distribute-list command. You can however use the distribute-list in
command to prevent a route in the SPF database from showing up in the
router's routing table. That only affects that one router though; all other
routers in the area will learn the route.

If you want to filter LSA's with OSPF, check out the ip ospf database-filter
command.
