bgp next-hop-self

Hi , group

    I had read sample sample on cisco website, for the bgp
's next-hop-self command, it always set to ebgp to
transfer the route from ibgp.
   But sometimes I set it to ebgp, the route received by
ibgp some time appear , sometime dispear. If I set the
next-hop-command in ibgp, the route table will keep
stable. Why?
    How aboue the rlue to set the command?
