I thought(or could have sworn reading someplace, maybe here) that with the
advent of newer IOS versions 12.2 etc. the reload was no longer needed? I
may have that mixed up with the ISDN switch type.

No, there is no other way. When you change the interface type, a reload is
required.

When I want to change the frame relay subinterface type from multipoint to
point-to-point I got this message

I forced to reload the router. Is there another way to do that ?
