Technically your router could have enough memory but not enough free
continuous memory (aka fragmented memory). So when checking the amount
of free memory you need to also check the largest free block of memory
available. Under normal operations these numbers should be pretty close.

Do a show proc mem with no bgp configured and see what your free memory
level is. If it is too low, the router won't be able to start certain
processes. Take a look at this link:

Subject: Memory allocation of 40 bytes failed

Hi Group,

I have a problem with my 4500 series router. The router has a 32 MB
memory,
but as soon as I start configuring bgp it runs out of memory. Below you
will find the error message. Can some one tell me if this can be cured
through configuration?

Thanks
John Tafasi
