When the router hangs try disconnecting all it's interfaces and see if the
console start to respond again.
I had a similar thing the other day with a 4500 and a HSSI interface. The
HSSI was connected to a MUX and on the other end of the MUX was a E3
circuit. If the Tx and Rx were connected the wrong way on the MUX the HSSI
lights would go on solid and the router stopped responding to the console.
As soon as the E3 was disconnected the router came back to life.
If your router comes back after the cables are removed then maybe you have
faulty cables or clocking problems.

Subject: Hung Router
I looked in the archive and did not see anything closely relating to what I
am experiencing.
In the midst of configuring my lab, a router that I am not currently working
on will hang. I still receive log messages, but the console prompt
disappears. I would normally relate this to high CPU utilization, but I
only had frame-relay configured at the time and had not begun building
anything on top of it. When I reboot, the router will complete the boot
process, but will not give me a prompt. When I boot the router ignoring
NVRAM, the prompt comes back. This happened on all my routers connecting to
the frame relay switch (2522), three 2600s and one 2501. I had completed
the OSPF configuration on one router and when I went to configure its
neighbor, the router was hung. While I worked on that router, the other
neighboring routers hung. Again, the recovery process was the same.
Has anyone seen this before? Or have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Jeff Colburn
