It was a different version of the boot ROM, upgraded version. It was
very strange to me as well when this all happened. I hadn't touched the
boot ROM in that router but had upgraded the flash and so I was sure
that the problem was in that upgrade. But sure enough, the known good
flash did not solve my problem. Popped those ROMs out and worked like a
charm.

Interesting - thanks for sharing that experience. Was it the
same exact
version of new boot ROM that was used to replace the old one?
Even it was the same ROMs, simply removing them and replacing
them may
solve the problem. How? It is possible (but rare) that a
socketed IC
(integrated circuit) can build up enough oxidation between one
or more
IC pins and the socket to cause intermittent contact problems.
