2-5, at least, would seem possible from a non-3550 (5x00 perhaps) to a 3550.
It's probably a very useful exercise to distinguish what you can do between:
Two 3550's only
3550 and other switch of lesser cost (e.g., 5x00)
3550 and router
You'll certainly want one 3550, if only to learn the interface. The
question comes up is how close you can get to dual-3550 equivalence
with other combinations of gear, including creative things like more
than one cheap switch to a 3550, or multiple routers with FE
interfaces.
As with things like ATM, it might be cost-effective to rent time for
those things that MUST have two 3550s, if a large part of the other
functionality can be kludged together.
