Just to be picky. 3550 SMI on latest version will also do layer 3 but
not full routing capability. I believe it will support RIP routing, so
it does support routing in a limited capacity.

No, the SMI version also displays the same message (remember that SMI
also does L3 routing!). Firmware filename is the key, see Brian's answer
above.
