The first thing to check is Fast Switching. Make sure that "no ip route cache"
is not configured on your interfaces... Especially high BW int's.. If your
using CEF, it should be enabled globally. I had to troubleshoot a 7513 once
that was 80-100% utilized all the time. The IP Input was at about 20-25% What
had happened is the old network admin (I replaced) thought it would be a good
idea to "tweak" things and disabled fast switching on every interface, he also
increased the input queues from 40 to like 400 and set arp timeouts to 0!!! It
took about 3 minutes to fix and the CPU util went down to 5-10%. Also, I
looked at the flash and found out the that router had crash dumps about 2-4
times a month for over a year. HSRP wasn't enabled between 7500's and the 7513
was doing all inter-vlan routing (Instead of the 6500's) so these outages
probably cost the company millions.
