See if this helps. It mentions minimum and maximum for SX and LX over
single mode and multi mode and quotes the IEEE spec for 802.3z

Subject: Minimum distance for Single Mode fiber

Hello all,

Does anyone have definitive information on the minimum distance that LX
GBICS should be allowed to operate over Single Mode fiber cables?

I have heard there is an issue with laser burning if the distance is too
short or something to that effect.

Can anyone verify and point to a definitve reference?

Thanks,

Curtis
